Why We Exist
Currently, African Americans, Native American, Latino/a and other minorities suffer from significantly greater rates of cancer morbidity (having it) and mortality (deaths) than Caucasians in the United States. This is due to barriers experienced by minorities such as past neglectful treatment by health care providers, distrust in the medical system, and excessive costs for treatment.
What We Do About It
The One Stop Cancer Shop aims to provide to the Omaha and Nebraska community with the education and opportunity to prevent the prevalence of cancer within our minority populations. The One Stop Cancer Shop has two broad goals:
-
Provide Cancer prevention education, screening, and resources and linkages towards treatment for the local Omaha community.
-
Train the next generation of nursing students on how to effectively build trust, build rapport, and to gain experience in providing adequate and culturally responsive care with communities and people of color.
